Five months into... rehab-cercise

It’s been almost a year since the last pesky knee injury and finally some great news :) The road to recovery was fraught with laziness and a general lack of discipline (damn you!) But eventually, persistence, the threat of injections and an operation has somehow worked.

I have to admit that once the initial pain was dealt with, it took me longer to understand that my problems need long-term work. My problem is slightly unique, if not a bit baffling. Apparently, all the years of dancing, competitive sports, exercise classes and performing has taken a toll. What’s funny is that my body has become so used to a high amount of activity that it demands these activities be kept up! Lack of follow through on my part will result in reigniting old injuries, aches and all sorts of pains. Isn’t that wonderful?

Real Pilates: Home of great teachers
and challenging classes
Attempts of slothery (is that even a word?) now aborted, I had to restart something. Trying to work out in the gym at the apartment was thwarted because, surprise – the elliptical damned near wrenched the knee. It became too hot to swim and the impact from Zumba was more jarring that helpful. Good grief. Thankfully, my really cool physio, Jac came to the rescue, suggesting I go back to Pilates and to keep that knee working, try Xtend Barre.

Whomever thought that Xtend Barre was easy is completely nuts. It is a mix of mat pilates, barre exercises combined with weights, toning balls and resistance. To me, it almost feels like my ballet classes of yore, minus leaping about like a goat. Five months into what I dub as rehab-cercise, and I’m up to three classes a week (mix of Xtend, mat and reformers), plus a session of foam rolling every day. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve slowly inched back into salsa social. The result? I am mostly pain free! YAY!

Photo care of Ems Pen
My little trick to maintain up all this is simple. I do it on my own. That way, I only have myself to blame if things aren’t up to speed. I’m not one of those people who need to have friends around when I work out, so the routine has been great. I get a nice workout and some me time. And the results have shown… no I’m not on my way to a six-pack, but my fitness is up, as is core strength and stamina. So is cardio and being mildly vain, I’ve tweaked parts of my diet so that my body can keep up. Oh and the drinks are still there, I haven’t gone completely mad!

The lesson learnt is simple. Self-discipline and persistence is essential. Not every exercise is for you, neither are fad diets nor going with a crowd. For me, staying healthy means being active, which meant finding exercises that are challenging yet strengthening. It has taken some time to figure out how my body works and what it needs but it has paid off. Oh, I look better too but you’re not going to see a damned selfie…*rolls eyes*

The great chronicle of pain

Just when I thought that things are finally on some sort of even keel, it's annual injury time. Annual injury? Uh, yea... ever since I managed to dislocate my hip sometime in 2009, I've had to take extra care of myself to prevent injury.

The hip injury was a bit strange. It happened after pilates class, all I did was sit on a rail at the bus stop and when I got off, I felt excruciating pain shoot up my hip. That was the start of it all:
  • 2009 - Said hip dislocation. Took about 5 weeks of physio and reformers for a full recovery. I got started on pilates here.
  • 2010 - Looking at this video, you cannot tell but my knee was the size of a melon just 4 weeks before this video. That was the result of a fall in ballet. Note: Don't get distracted by the cute guy while leaping like a goat it can lead to disaster. Healing took about 4 weeks with nightly icing down and stretching. If you are a dancer, you'd know the hell I was going through. Plus there's no way I'd sit out this performance! It's Dirty Dancing! Thankfully, the performance went without a hitch. Kudos again, to the groom, who before his wedding was always our official photographer and never a dancer. And he did the solo too... it was an amazing night :)

  • 2011 - a fall (more like a slip and crumple to the floor) while practicing for a performance caused near panic when I couldn't get up from bed the next morning. Three weeks of physio and stretching to sort out my back.
  • 2012 - rib cartiledge sprain sustained post performance, during the India Fiesta Latina. This was after 3 days of intense classes and about 4 nights of dancing till about 3am. How painful was it? Despite a really relaxing trip to Goa afterwards, I wasn't able to sleep or turn over and coughing or taking deep breaths felt like my rib was about to bust open. Fun times.
Which brings us up to this year. Post injury last year, I was in physio for another 4 weeks and then, I found Trigger Point classes. I finally got on track to strengthen my body and also work out all the kinks so that I will be less injury prone. I got stronger, which means I danced more and stayed mostly injury free :) Yay!

Fast forward to this year and a few weeks ago where Dubai felt two pretty big aftershocks. When the second one hit, my boss bolted down the stairs. Now, I know my body and just the effect of running down the stairs like that meant bad news. News that manifested in the form of a kneecap sprain that had me limping around in Jordan. I wrote to my physio back in SG and got a recommendation to see a local physio who worked at a clinic called Up and Running here.

Taped up and roller-ed
The physio, Jac was mildly horrified at my seemingly endless litany of injuries and she was almost beside herself (and so was my SG physio and V) when they learned that I did not bring my roller wtih me to Dubai. GAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! Hence the pain and malfunctions! It's a wonder you could still dance and go for freaking Zumba! Ok, ok....

My new best friends
Well, it's been a painful road to recovery and I'm back to using the roller. If you've never tried the grid before, it's something new to explore. It works out the kinks, kind of like a massager. You use yoru body weight for pressure. For recoving people like me, it is also used to strength your body. That said, the roller will now be part of a new routine. My advice? If at any time you feel that some body part or other is not working, get it checked out. Because if you don't do it now, it may get worse down the road. Such is the life of the injury prone :p but then again, if I don't take care of me and mine, who will?

Breaking out to get into the new

After a while, or rather, an age, I realize that people tend to grow attached to one form of music or another. Yes, that is you West Coast Swing DJs! Not everyone, just a few guilty ones. *death glare* you know who you are.
Lost in a moment...Heh
Regardless of the decade you grew up in, everyone has a music tell.

People around my parents’ age have music that range from the Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, DeepPurple, Elvis, to the Rolling Stones or Led Zepplin for the more rebellious. Which brings me to the point of this post – what is your music tell and how the hell do you break new music in?

You don’t have one? Tsk, tsk... What song pops into your head when you’re stressed or need something to sing to or are driving? A lot of people turn to the music that they grew up to and that is the music that often soothes them. A lot of dancers I know have a few pieces that they practice to, but that’s it. Once they are out of the practice room, they actually listen to a lot of music to prep choreography, incorporate different styles add flavor to their pieces.

Not many people actually break out of the musical genres that they love. I am guilty of this too. A child of the 80s, I grew up in a family that loved live music, Motown, rock, blues and slick funkadelic sounds. Music was about the beat, groove and voices that influenced generations of musicians and audiophiles.

I loved and still love all my pop confections. They grew into a love for the 80s rockers, the gravelly angst of grunge and then in the 90s it was hello Britpop and where the hell did all these awesome bands come from? There were the happy-sounding beats but what made it so different was the lyrics were smart. There was no ‘I’m so lonesome I could die’, instead it was about girls who liked boys who need girls who are boys or boys who wanted to wear my face like you, Shiseido MAC and Maybelline and OMG, Take That! A boy band with a member who actually wrote their lyrics. Damn! Thanks to friends, I let more influences in by attending a shitload of concerts and musicals. I also briefly worked for a local music outlet whose staff resembled the staff in Empire Records. The HighFidelity characters where what we eventually grew up to be. Some of us still make mixed tapes, we have lists for almost every mood and some of us can only express our feelings through the songs of others, because, who else can be as eloquent?

But breaking out of our staid musical cycles is a journey of discovery. Only you will know what you like…I tried several times to get into the Radiohead madness but all I liked were three or four songs. I can’t fathom dance music and all its different genres, some country makes me glassy eyed and classical music, let’s not go down there.

To break out of your cycle, I’d suggest listening to as many different types of artists that you can. Spread yourself out to different genres, ask your friends what they like and see if you like it too. Who knows what you’ll find? I found artists like Florence + the Machine, Mumford & Sons and M83. Recently, I've recently rediscovered my love for blues and am tracking down some new artitsts.

So, don’t get stuck in a rut. Try some new music today. Just like this fella...

Into the swing of things

One day, I am going to make it to an international West Coast Swing event. Seeing the pros in action even online at the US Open is inspiring enough for me to want to venture out to explore this dance form even further :) Two of the dance that completely blew me away this year were:

Who can forget Benji Schwimmer? That boy is amazing to watch and he brings so much energy to his performances. And his partner Torri Smith? Phenomenal.

And then of course, there is Jordan and Tat, who came to Singapore this year to help us local dancers up our West Coast Swing game. I totally agree with a friend of mine who says that they need better costumes LOL but still. The simplicity of the moves and their musicality is breath-taking.

If you'd like to learn West Coast Swing, check out Mosaic Dance. Annddd, if you've already picked up this dance and want to learn from the pros, Swingvitation 2013 is the event for you. To be held from 25 to 28 April 2013, this is your chance to brush up your WCS skills from FIVE champion dancers :) Check them out today.

Me? I feel that my dancing has improved but there's still some ways to go to. Hopefully, I get to do another Jack & Jill next year too. Those things can be nerve wracking but too fun :)

Practice and then some

For some reason, the last half of the year has been like a mad house.

This year, I've just wrapped up an event in Thailand, dealt with a client who wants a miracle to happen, am taking on a six sub-region rollout and will be closing out the work year with a big computer graphics event. All in the span of four months. Yes, life is exciting *rolls eyes*

But on to more exciting things... progress in West Coast Swing (WCS) has been a little slow, but is getting there. The last weekend of August was spent with Melissa Rutz and Chuck Brown, two WCS champion dancers who were in town to whip the WCS community here in to shape.

As long as there's a camera, dancers are hams
I booked my first WCS private class with Melissa. Had to work on my basics just so that I can get it right. With the hectic work schedule, it's tough to get into the swing (no pun intended) of things sometimes because oftimes I'm too tired. Let me just say that if you really want to learn, booking a private class with one of the champion dancers is good way to progress. Why? Because you get one on one time with the instructor and she/he will be able to asses your level and help you work on the areas that you are having difficulty in. That said, taking privates does not instantly qualify you as a champion dancer yourself. You still need regular practice at socials and also in taking classes.

But what the heck do you do in private class? Here's some tips for anyone considering taking privates:
  • Know what you want to work on. Do you want to brush up on your basics, or work on your lead/follow technique? It's pretty important that you walk into the class knowing what you want. Or having questions about your technique and what you think should be improved. This will help you maximize your time with the instructor and you will talk away with a few things to work on.
  • Be realistic. You won't learn everything at once. Don't walk into the class expecting to just get a full download on everything from the instructor. These guys are professionals who teach for a living and there is no way you can learn everything from them in the span of an hour.
  • Pick the right teacher for you. Prior to booking your session, do a little research. Ask friends, your current instructors or even Google the instructor that is coming to town. Learn a bit more about their teaching style. For me, I chose to work with Melissa because I know that she places a lot of emphasis on technique. She was really patient with me and picked up on some of my body movement that even my current instructors didn't latch on to.
  • Be open to critique. I am a salsa dancer who's trying to learn WCS, but the basics in lead and follow are different and sometimes I struggle with it still. Where should my weight be? How long should I wait before stepping On1. There is a lot to take in and as a learner, and sometimes being shown the right thing to do is the best way to learn. It'll stop those bad habits for sure!
  • There is no such thing as one style of teaching. Sure, your instructors may have their dance heroes and teach like them but that doesn't mean you cannot learn technique from other teachers. Sometimes students and even teachers are so set in their ways that they can't break out from it. Don't be rigid about learning. Have an open mind to learn as you go.
  • Practice. Whatever you learn in class won't be perfected unless you take the time to practice and dance. Once you get the moves right, you can relax more into the dance and have a ton of fun
Melissa Rutz and me...Ms Potato Head LOL
That said, it's still an uphill battle for me but it seems to be coming along. Will somehow have to ease back into the dance/workout schedule so that I don't turn into Jabba the Hut when I think no one's watching,

Let me hear your body talk

I've always been a chubby kid. Regardless of how much I exercised, starved myself and no matter how much I followed those damned fad diets, I always had curves.

Post Zumba madness
As an adult, the curves still remain. To be honest, I've made peace with them a long time ago. My entire family's been fleshy and there is no point fighting a fruitless battle. Hence my aim is to be healthy, but toned. Slimmer but not ripped. I love my curves...being too skinny is terrifies me and overly defined muscles are frankly, disgusting. Eating right is also part of the regime but I cheat sometimes too LOL, I'm only human!

I hate running but because I am doing Zumba, these are my first trainers in years
Being sidelined by injury recently didn't help. I was unable to do anything for two months...I'd like to dance for a long time and hence, I knew that taking a break was vital. Am finally out of rest period and this time around, I went with a more targeted regime of body conditioning, body movement and something called SMRT-Core, just to retrain my body. For cardio, I stuck to my staples of salsa and West Coast Swing and added Zumba. For someone who has been into latin dancing and also other forms of dance, Zumba is fun. It's nothing to go mad over but it's a nice alternative to aerobics.

For someone who is allergic to the gym, this new routine works me. I do classes either alone or with friends and it doesn't feel like I am torturing myself. Or make me feel like a hamster. Bottom line is, the regime will do three things: help me get into fighting shape, minimize injury and get back into that damned salsa costume.

Three weeks down and it seems that the healing process and the cardio build up is working rather well. The pain from the rib cartiledge injury has diminished to small aches that remind me that I'm no wonder woman. I also have more stamina to dance for longer periods. All is good. SMRT-Core surprised me because it is a combination of physical therapy as well as core building exercises that really works to strengthen my body and eliminate the injury.

Well, I'm going to try to stick to the routine for a while. The results thus far, have been pretty awesome.

Of inspirations and heroes

It's quite cool when you get to meet people who have inspired you. Last evening, me, along with a whole bunch of "Burson persons" got to meet the esteemed Harold Burson. If you just went Harold, who? Please click on the link provided *facepalm*

At 91, Mr Burson still heads into the office every day.
It's not every day that you get to meet the founder of an agency, let alone someone whose work inspired me to pick public relations as a career. The journey has been challenging thus far and I still love it.

Inspirations come in many forms. From work to hobbies...I still have an agonizing four more weeks of rehab to go when one of my friends sent me this little clip to cheer me up :)  Ah, Jon M. Chu, you may be hokey at times, but you do have that knack for inspiring. Keep it up!

Swinging all the way

April for me was truly the month of dance, which started with the India Fiesta Latina and rounded off with Swingvitation in Singapore.

West Coast Swing is something that I picked up over four months ago and took me quite a while to get used to. But still, never say never, right? Took part in my first Jack & Jill this year, on the heels of my return from a great India session. Never mind I haven't been up to par on West Coast Swing. I was sick for about three weeks prior to India and injured when I returned. The injury is a result of too many body movement classes in India. The good news? It's not a fracture...it's a rib cartilage sprain. The pain was horrendous and I was unable to get a good night's sleep or even flip over. Since my visit to the physio and doctor's, I haven't  been dancing. Sigh. Injuries suck. Kiddies, please don't follow in my footsteps, if you are injured, sit it out.

At Jack & Jill... Next year, I will do better!
Winners of the Jack & Jill. A pair are my cousin.(s)...please don't hurt yourself guessing who. LOL
It was a great weekend filled with workshops, friends as well as West Coast champions, Jordan and Tatiana who were really able to break down the dance and show us a couple of new things. I managed to do one social night but wasn't up to dancing with Jordan. Pride meant that if I wanted to social with an international instructor, I had to be at least decent.

The dance family... literally
Kudos to the folks at  Mosaic Dance and Jitterbugs for introducing West Coast Swing and bringing the dance to so many people. Till the next Swingvitation!

Oh Yeendia!

Back from India, all refreshed and browner :)

I have to say that this time around, the trip was a heck lot more enjoyable because we didn't rush around as much. We had time to do the workshops that we really wanted and also time to wind down and simply relax in Goa. That, overall was awesome.

Overall, the India Fiesta Latina was a great festival. We made new friends, got to know some old friends better and danced all night since the time we landed till the end of the festival. I have to say that there are some pretty impressive Indian salsa teams, and some, like Bad Salsa were jaw-droppingly good.

We performed a more polished cha cha piece and the extra effort showed. The only downside is that my partner fractured his foot and was unable to perform, hence I only worked the shines with the ladies...but still. I have to say though, that the thrill for performing is still there. Even though the butterflies have diminished over time, when you are on stage and presenting a piece that you've all worked so hard for, it IS worth it.

Dance Unlimited Singapore performance team

In addition to the usual partner/shines/styling workshops that we all did, I managed to snag a place in the workshop with Meher Malik. I had no idea who she was at first, but after watching some videos of her dancing on Youtube, I was really excited. Because there are run-of-the mill belly dancers and then there are belly dancers who simply dance with a joy de vive that is absolutely a delight to watch.  The only downside of her workshop was that it was overrun by over enthusiastic, rabid fans who were more interested in watching and talking with her over learning something substantial. That said, I still went for the workshop and came out with this:

Would someone please bring this woman down to Singapore for classes? There are so many things we can learn from her! Heh...

There is just so much to cover with the trip and all but then again, you can see those photos for yourself. Enjoy! For I surely did :)

Sakit sampai pening

On the mend, in the end
it only took like 3 weeks.
coughed out both lungs
expunged so much scum
This time, I shall live

Incidentally that title reads: sick until headache. LOL Getting sick really sucks. Your brain is all foggy, your body is non-cooperative and all you want to do is curl up in a ball and die. Dramatic? But of course! Hey, at least this time I wasn't moaning away like a haunted house ghost.

But why so sick, right? I happened to catch some weird bug that has been plaguing the office and got the works. I just have to bloody soldier on and get better before India, which I leave for this week, which is also right in the middle of a client event. Talk about packing it all in...I've barely even though about my trip. GAH!

It's ok, it's ok...packing shall commence on the day of. It'll take me all of 30mins and then, we're good to go. To INDIA!

Sometimes, it's just madness

I'm busy,
it's work,
I dance,
there is simply not enough hours of the day.

Faced a personal crisis,
saved my sanity,
promptly fell ill
I just want to coast for now.

The last couple of months have gone from being really nice and easy to tumultuous in a space of a few weeks. A tough decision was called for and while it killed me just a little, I realized that I was all the better for making it. I don't believe in half measures and that I cannot abide fickleness. Now, all I want to do is huddle in a corner and hibernate.

But I can't do that. For if I hibernate, I will mull and most likely fall into a deep funk. So here I am, pushing myself to do more, go out and see people, work more, dance more and just simply be more. Moving on means staying occupied and focusing on what I can do better. I simply cannot afford to hide.

It is one of the reasons why I haven't blogged in ages. I am just working out a few kinks in my armor and simply learning how to get back on the horse again. Well, things are slowly getting better and hopefully, I will be back in full form soon. Healing is a bitch, but I have to go through the motions.

Just wanna make the world dance

Dancing always brings about new challenges.

For a dance team, it means having great group dynamics in addition to learning the steps. The steps should also be clean, coordinated and look flawless. God knows that looking flawless is never easy.

Every once in a while, I'll trawl online for videos that will teach me more. There are only so many classes a dancer can take. And yet, there is still so much to learn in terms of body movement and styling that we can do to improve the way we dance. Don't get me wrong, classes are great but to really practice what you've learnt, you have to do it on the social floor (yes, I nag but you and I know that this is true for any dancer.)

But enough yammering, right. Check this out:

These guys are from the Santo Rico dance company in New York. The one word that came to my mind as I was watching this was: confidence. It takes a lot of pizzaz to move like that! I love the choreography and the ladies' confidence and body movements! The transitions and musicality of the piece are pretty flawless, even though this has to be one of the longest pieces for a salsa team.

Costumes are a big part of any group. It shows great group cohesion and breathes life to the choreo. Sexy costumes are a way of showing off the curves of the woman in addition to showcase her exquisite moves. We all know how ridiculous the costumes can get but what will you do if you encounter..jeng jeng jeng...*stage whisper* the dreaded wardrobe malfunction?

You CARRY ON DANCING. If you weren't as sharp-eyed (or blind if you missed that little nugget), you'd probably not notice that small glitch. Holy crap, I'm amazed that she could still nail that performance with all its complicated choreo and tricks. Kudos! I hope to be as professional should anything happen.

Finally, this last video that I came across features one of the fastest couples on the salsa scene today. John Vazques and  Judy Aguila, salsa world champions. They have a distinct style that is both breathtaking and so damned hard to emulate. Oh and note: this video is NOT speeded up. They really do dance like that.

Well, that's it from me for this year then. Wishing you a happy one and a great 2012! And yes, this is the team :o)

Days of inspiration

People. They drive me bonkers.

Confounding, complex and oftimes just a pain in the arse. This year is filled with so many different people, characters and personalities that I feel like I am in a comic book or in Les Mis. This is the year I learned how complicated people can make my life, how even the smallest thing can trigger the biggest changes and how sometimes, those who you regard as your closest allies can cling to their own beliefs with such ardor that they are blind to anything else.

This post is dedicated to the people who made my ride all the more colorful. You made me swear incessantly at you (some in person, some in other forms) or with you. Thanks to you, I laugh more, found a new job with great support from a strong team, refined my hobbies, lowered tolerance for idiots and become less passive-aggressive.  You encouraged me step out of my comfort zone to meet new people and do things that I probably wouldn't even consider because I am such a lazy arse.

To the lost friends, too bloody bad. Yes, God may have brought you back to my life for whatever reason. One of it is probably for me to personally tell you fuck off. It's cold, but what can I say? While I like reconnecting with lost friends, I also believe that some should just remain lost. Not every connection is for the better. Especially if it reminds you of a particularly horrible time in your life. Just bloody move on.

If you are wondering how the fricking hell I managed to work around all these people, don't. Staying in touch is not rocket science. It's about reaching out and strengthening ties to the people who are already there. So friends are outside of your work environment, it doesn't mean that they should be neglected or accorded less respect just because you have a high-and-mighty job. If you don't take the time to meet up, chat or even do something...anything together, then what's the point of remaining friends? Who will want to make time for someone who doesn't bother? It's not only about you...it's also about the other party who has taken the time to reconnect. Uh huh, it is just like a relationship, people, except you don't have to sleep with your friend (unless you want to...but that is a whole different story).

It takes effort on all sides to do this but believe me, the pay-offs are pretty great :o) The proof is in the pictures.

It ain't always about you

Time waits for no man.

Such a simple concept but it is one that many and even I struggle to cope with. We are all guilty of it. At some point of time, we procrastinate, get lazy, circumstance work against us, other people are being douches...no matter how much we whinge, the bottom-line is, we have to work through all this crap to get ahead.

Of course you can waste as much time as you want on a personal basis. But when you mess with others's schedules, I have no patience for you.

Because of the nature of my job and my personality, I am not one to sit around and waste time. Planning so that things run generally smoothly and everyone is pretty happy is a big thing for me. Control freak? Not really, I will gladly relinquish that position to someone who will do it for me BUT if I am on the job, it falls to me to ensure that everyone runs on a general schedule so that they and I can get back to our normal  routines.

I am not a patient person, nor am I tolerant of flakiness and idiocy. These things drive me bonkers. What I cannot understand is, how hard is it for one person to be on top of their own schedule? If I can plan interview schedules for over 40 people for a regional event, I don't see how planning for a group of nine should be any tougher. It's ridiculous. All I need from everyone involved is to be aware of their own schedule, be considerate of others' and agree, disagree or provide constructive feedback. I will handle the details.

Here's the deal. The task is to schedule a shoot, a photographer, nine people in different jobs, think of locations, outfits and a date and time before December 1. We only have two weekends to do this as we have members who are working shifts and will be going on holiday. It's not hard...but a little consideration for everyone involved goes a long way. The group helped in providing location ideas, the photographer details and ideas on outfits, which I really appreciate.

What I did not appreciate is, having one person screw with the entire thing. Twice. Because they don't have a handle on their own schedule, I have to scramble to re-arrange dates and schedules with everyone, cancel on the original photographer, call in contacts who can make the shoot happen within a reasonable budget and talk to people to get all the details in place. It is a lot of details to handle but things got done. My aim for this is simple: get the shoot done on time, within budget and with the entire team.

It bothers me that they didn't stop to think that because of their actions, others have to re-arrange their schedules too. All the team got was a simple 'sorry, I can't do weekends'. No explanations, no remorse. We are expected to commiserate. WTF? Are we supposed to be sitting around waiting for you? Who the hell do you think you are?

I can be as inconsiderate and selfish by simply passing of the project to the next hapless person but that is not done. If this was my own project, I'd have told the fuckwit to piss-off a long time ago. But it's not. At the same time, I am no pushover and I will somehow have to manage the situation and person too.

Patience and calmness. *ohmmmmm*

One night in Bangkok

Back in the groove...well some what. The last couple of months were too hectic for words but extremely rewarding as things moved fast and well. It's hard to predict work and dance schedules but this time around, the big energy shows clashed with dance which resulted in me going a bit mad.

The recent Bangkok Salsa Fiesta was a blast! The entire team was up there from Nov 4 - 7 for a weekend of workshops and performances. Amid flood stories, we heard from friends on the ground that the city itself was dry...and so we took a chance and went. Turned out to be a great trip because we had so much fun dancing, learning and performing. Oh, for another congress!

We performed two pieces, one was the salsa piece and the other this brand-new chacha piece...what do you think?

Dancing in September

What do you do when work is nuts and it's time to celebrate your bosses' birthday?

You flash the dude. Hehe....

Now, who's birthday is next?

Raindrops on roses and so on and so forth

Just when I thought I'd be less injury prone, something will bloody malfunction at the worst time. Fuck. It's just like the freaking Godfather movies.

Somehow, a stupid strain managed to become a bigger problem with one slow-mo fall at practice. Felt like I was in a John Woo movie. And so I thought I wasn't hurt badly, still managed to have post-practice drinks with the mates before heading home.  Did the requisite warm ups and cool downs but despite that, the little niggling ache still managed to wake me in the wee hours of the morning with a dull pain and an inability to turn right. !@#@$%$@%%^%  WTH man. Am going to spend the next two days resting...which means no dancing and recovery stretches. There's a gig this weekend and please, don't get me started on obligations. I'm just bloody frustrated with myself right now.

Anyways, in happier events, I have been looking at something new to try out when I get to San Diego later this month. Nothing better than trying out something new on totally foreign territory, I say! They have classes here in Singapore too but my schedule's too packed to accommodate anything new for now.

But check this out. West Coast Swing (WCS) is not new but boy, does it widen the horizons in terms of social partner dancing! It seems that the Salsa On2 variation of the Lindy Hop to me...but at the same time, a lot smoother and graceful than Lindy.

Looks pretty cool, right? I for one am quite the inspired *wiggles eyebrows* The challenge here is to dance with the knees straight, in contrast to the latin style with the bent knees that gives the hips and body more sway. Would be interesting to see if I can adapt to something more lyrically expressive though. That is, if I still have my knees and back...mwhahahahahah

Music-wise, there is a lot more room in terms of genres that can be tapped. While traditionally, WSC adapts a lot of R&B (think Aretha Franklin and more blusey music), today you can dance to literally anything! Just like these guys below (ok, who doesn't love Benji Schwimmer? Such a ham..):

And for the rebels out there...

Think creatively and let your body and feet do the moving! :o)

Let's go crazy...let's get nuts

Hello alls! *waves* I am still alive and mosey-ing along :)

It has been a hectic couple of months with work, classes and  also rehearsals coming together. Granted, it's nothing new but God-dammit, I'm dying for my summer break! Mid-year is always the busiest time, literally turning you into a crazy-ass octopus.

Being busy is great, I love it. Having different things to do means learning to work them all into my schedule with the least amount of chaos. It's a juggling act for sure, balancing work and all sorts of client needs, colleagues plus incorporating time to work on my techniques, learn new performance routines, take classes and developing a small shines routine for the team. The biggest challenge this year is to balance dance while at the same time, work harder within the billable hours, putting in extra hours when necessary.

Getting the right mix of work-life balance is bloody hard! Work is always be there and while you try not to work off-hours, it takes some freaking skill to plan ahead to ensure that things are done on time. After shutting down for the day, it's time to psyche myself up for practice or classes. Not easy when there are some crazy people demanding attention even after work. This year, the team is learning a new routine and style that we are largely unfamiliar with. Things are coming together but it takes a lot of time and practice. We're looking forward to wow-ing the salseros in Thailand in November, hence we're working extra hard to ensure that the routine's amazing!

That said, the personal goals for this year are coming along quite nicely; learning new styles, no injury time and pulling back on social drinking. I'm not a crazy alchy but I recognize that combining both on practice days kill. Performers know this and yes, I've had bad days which were totally counterproductive so cutting drinking is a relatively easy decision. No more drinking especially on practice nights. Health-wise, I've managed to stay on track with no injury and things are looking good.

Am bloody glad that with all this and work, I've not turned into a bigger panda than I already am! The downside is that patience is not something I have in spades and I suffer no fools. When things get crazy, it's essential that all parties pitch in to run things as smoothly as we can. Therefore it's important to factor in time to breathe or go postal.

Can you believe that it's already mid-year? Fucking hell! Still more excitement to come for sure, and it'll take more patience (must find from somewhere or import!), hard work and resilience to make it all work. And to that I say: Bring it on!

That Swayze allure

Ok confession time: how many of you out there took up dancing or were tempted to learn to mambo after watching Dirty Dancing?

I was so damn tickled upon learning that my female instructor did the exact same thing and dragged her best friend to boot! Looking at her, you wouldn't think that she would be the type of person who took up salsa dancing on a whim. Interestingly, enough, the woman later went on to win a solo competition and is now one of the top female salsa instructors in Singapore. Incidentally, the woman also met her husband on the dance floor - some of us are just that lucky.

I am blaming this solely on the late, great Patrick Swayze, who probably conned at least two generations of women (and me) to start learning the mambo and probably also pick up pottery. WTH. Which other dance movie had a dance instructor who was that hot and looked like he thoroughly enjoyed dancing? He had the body, the moves and everyone got jelly legs when he uttered "nobody puts baby in the corner." He can come drag me to the dance floor anytime!

Everybody wanted to learn from an instructor like that and the boys probably thought that he was gay, but what do they know? The only other movie that came close to starting this sort of madness again was that damn hot Argentine Tango scene in Take the Lead with Antonio Banderas.

So after the excitement of the movie, I eventually went to sign up for my first salsa class (which my own cousin promises to be great) and then out walks the instructor who looks like....Ali G. Devastation. He even talks a little like Ali G. -_-" but then, I grew to like salsa and then a couple of weeks, then months, than years later, here I am. Still a nutcase looking for my Swayze nonetheless, at least a much better dancer now. To be honest, Swayze wasn't my only pull factor, there was also some random salsa instructor who popped by the Capitol Gramaphone outlet where I was working at one point and decided to show me how to dance while demo-ing a couple of salsa CDs.  Talk about getting inspired ;)

Ladies, let me be totally straight: the chances of you finding someone that remotely resembles the Swayze is nil to zero. Granted there are a few delectable, hip shaking fellas out there but those guys are few and far between.

My advice? Pick up dancing because you want to, because it is fun and no, one, NO ONE should ever pigeon-hole you can tell you what you should or should not do. And that is my two-cents for this week.

Poppin' it

How amazing was that? The movements just seem to melt into each other. And yes, his name is Salah...no mistake there. Wish I could move like that. I look like a retarded chicken in comparison. Trust me, people have seen and almost died from it.

This video reminds me of the time when a good friend decided to stage a short exotic performance in a pub on a dare some years back. While I applaud the guts it took to do such a thing alone, what made everyone gasp (and almost die of mortification) was the fact that she decided to writhe on the pub floor. Yes, the very floor that has been danced, puked and spat on by everyone and their uncle. *gags* Needless to say, the wrong thing has been branded in our minds forever.

I'm sticking to my belief that pub floors are not in any way meant for writhing on. Unless you are in agony. Or dying.
