I write this crap, you know

Made a second contribution to the Singapore Business Review this week. Yay!

I'd like to add to that article. You know, writing and loving what you do is all well and good. But sometimes, you come across a subject or two that you have no taste for. It's simply not your cup of tea...then what?

In my case, I got well and truly lambasted for not committing to my pieces. It was upsetting and more than a little deflating :( It took me ages to understand what I was writing about. Then I had to deal with the client, the bosses and of course during all this, I had to deal the rest of my clients and of course, time didn't stop. It actually chugged on.

*deep breath* there is no point going all defensive and throwing out more excuses. In cases like this, it falls back to the writer to re-look at the work. No matter how sickening it feels. Nothing is worse than revisiting stuff you don't like but... shit happens. Like any other writer, I really frustrated when there are a ton of revisions to be done. How do you deal with subjects that you don't like? What happens if your editor decides to re-write your piece? Does this mean that you are truly crap or is your editor grandstanding? You have to listen to what the editor has to say and then go back to the drawing board. The longest time it took for one of my projects was eight months. Yes, eight. Why? Simply because the client didn't like my boss.

When something like that happens, there is little hope of changing things - unless something drastic happens.  In this case, my boss eventually left and was replaced by another. Once that happened, the project was approved by the client in 30 days. WTF, right? When it's a case of  a personality clash, the best thing the bosses can do is to change project managers. who the hell holds on to a project for so long? funnily enough, this rarely happens. Why? Cos no one can dislike a person that much. Right? Ha.

I am not perfect and sometimes it takes me too bloody long to just finish a piece. At the end of the day, I still have to respect that I do not know everything and hence have to rectify what needs to be done. It is upsetting when things like this happen and I hate second-guessing myself but I'll have to learn and bounce back from this.

What I believe in

I have a tendency to write about stuff that I believe in.

Last week I had a great opportunity to write a commentary for the Singapore Business Review and it presented me with a platform to write a piece for the business community in Singapore. Sounds damned highbrow, right?

It took a little pondering but at the end of the day, I wrote about what was closest to me. This is based on observations as well as things which are happening to colleagues, friends and people online. But enough talk, have you read it yet? What do you think? Let me know :)

Little voices in your head

This week's post is inspired by a good friend, The Big Bald Scary Guy.

We all have it. That niggly inner voice that pipes up every time we attempt to do something. It seems to up and whisper maliciously, 'you caannn'tt ddoo itt', or 'don't do ittt'. Oftimes, the voice is negative, telling you to err on the side of caution.

Caution is good - it's great, especially when you are about to do something that you know in you head sounds right. All good, except when caution turns to fear, or negativity. How then do you get over the fear and negativity? Airing your queries to friends is great but then again, the choice still lies with you. Talking to a million people won't help you, neither is listening to that little voice.

Here's a radical idea. You can choose NOT to listen to that voice. Sure, it helps you check your crazy ideas before taking a plunge but sometimes it restricts you too. Fear cripples you. It stunts personal growth and allows environmental noise and others' opinions get the best of you. Do you choose to act a certain way because of that little voice, of what others' think, or because you want to try something new for yourself?

My thought is this. Positive thinking is not about just listening to others. It is thinking smart and making the most informed decision that you can after hearing all sides out. Sometimes, you should take a step back and tell that little voice, 'yes I hear you. I know that you care but now, I need to make my decision.'

I've had instances where friends or even family refuse to listen to any opinions, sought or otherwise because they are adamant in their decision. Decisiveness s is cool. However, it needs to be checked if everyone is expressing the same opinion. It is then time to take a step back to listen. Being stubborn hurts no one but yourself. It shows that you are letting the fear rule you. Don't do that!

We all have a little fear of the unknown. Exploring options towards self betterment means that you are taking an important step. You are empowering yourself with the tools to look, be and feel better. How bad can that be? Ultimately, you become a stronger person because you have explored these options. No one can fault you and you can't look back in regret or thoughts of 'shoulda, woulda, coulda.'. So, heads, up people and stride bravely ahead!

I, writer

People and friends who've read this blog over the years have asked, are you really angry about some of the issues that you've written about?

Well, no.

What I have is an opinion. The anger that comes through is oftimes the result of observing people's behaviour and actions. Or rather stupidity ...even my own stupidity is not spared. When I speak, sometimes I get impatient and the people that I'm reaching out to fail to hear the message that I intended to convey. This blog is therefore an outlet for me to strive toward a more balanced argument or opinion.

And no, I'm not afraid of people reading it. That would make me an even bigger doofus. It's plain stupid to blog if you don't want people reading it. What I would prefer is having the people who sparked these thoughts to read the posts and give me their opinions. I'm sure people will recognize themselves if they chose to read between the lines.
Taking that an evil step further would be to tell specific people that I've written about them and then have them fall off their chairs. Or fall out with me.

Am I really that much of a shit stirrer? Admittedly, it would be fun to push a few people off their high horses but then again, why should I be the only one? Sometimes, I wished that people were a little more honest in their opinions and feelings. Don't just voice your opinion or say things, make it count. And when you dish, make sure your heart is open enough so that can take what others have to say.
Ultimately, this blog is me mouthing off. Read, don't read, pretend its not you or simply ignore what I'm saying, it's really up to you. As for me, I'll feel better because I've said my piece :o)
